  • Tropical storm could develop off Southeast coast
CHARLESTON, S.C. - A tropical depression off the Southeast coast is the first to threaten the U.S. this hurricane season, and forecasters said Saturday they expect it to strengthen into a tropical storm.

A tropical storm warning was in effect from the northern South Carolina coast to the North Carolina-Virginia border, the National Hurricane Center said. Three to 4 inches of rain had fallen in some areas along the North Carolina coast, and cities were under flood advisories as more rain was expected, said Reid Hawkins, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Wilmington, N.C.

  • Woman in W.Pa. baby mystery partially eviscerated
PITTSBURGH - A Pennsylvania medical examiner says the body of a woman linked to a mystery newborn baby had been partially eviscerated and her uterus was cut open.

The body was found in the western Pennsylvania apartment of another woman who police say showed up at a hospital with a newborn she falsely claimed was hers.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office in Pittsburgh isn't saying whether the dead woman was the baby's mother.

Authorities conducting the autopsy Saturday said the exact cause of death hadn't been determined.

The body's hands and feet were bound with duct tape.

  • Kiowa County ponders liquor by the drink
HOBART- Kiowa County commissioners will decide on Monday whether county residents should vote to lift the countywide ban on the sale of liquor by the drink.

If approved by the commission, voters will decide the issue in November's general election.

If approved, it won't be the first time voters were given this choice ? in 2004 the measure was defeated 680-620.

Proponents say lifting the ban on alcoholic beverages sold by the glass will help bring business, tourism and entertainment to the county, which suffers from a declining population.
