  • Two killed Friday in Oklahoma wrecks
    Two people died in collisions on state roads Friday, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Johnny Marvin Curtis, 70, Loyal. Curtis died at the scene of a Kingfisher County wreck east of his hometown about 6:45 p.m., troopers said. Curtis was northbound in his pickup on a rural dirt road when he ran off the right side of the road. The pickup struck a guardrail and rolled off of a bridge, coming to rest on its wheels in a creek 12 feet below, the patrol said. Troopers said Curtis was not wearing a seat belt. Roy D. Cheek, 34, Cleveland. A vehicle struck and killed Cheek as he walked on a Pawnee County highway west of Cleveland about 10 p.m, troopers said.

  • Oklahoma SWAT team to compete
    BROKEN ARROW (AP) - A SWAT team from Oklahoma is the only one from the U.S. invited to an international competition that will test their fitness, marksmanship and other skills. Eight members of the Broken Arrow Police Department's Special Operations Unit will travel Sept. 6-13 to Dusseldorf, Germany, for Metropolis 2008, an annual competition for SWAT teams. The Broken Arrow team will square off against 12 special-ops teams from Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. "We have a general idea of what to expect, but they are being pretty tightlipped about the specific events," said Capt. Heath Arning, who will lead the team.

  • Showers, thunderstorms in Oklahoma forecast
    Showers and thunderstorms are in Oklahoma's weekend forecast. The National Weather Service said a weak frontal boundary extended across west central portions of Oklahoma Saturday morning. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday afternoon and evening for portions of eastern, central and southern Oklahoma. Isolated showers are likely on Sunday, but high pressure will build into the region and prevail through the rest of the holiday weekend. This will result in dry weather conditions for Labor Day. By early next week, the focus will shift to the Gulf of Mexico and the eventual track of Hurricane Gustav.
