  • Agency sees monitoring vehicles as a route to everyday efficiency
    New technology will let administrators track state-owned vehicles every minute of the day and even alert drivers if they are speeding or facing a mechanical breakdown.

    The state Department of Central Services is in the process of hooking up diagnostic devices on 1,100 vehicles the agency leases to various state agencies. The department also is offering to provide the service, for a monthly fee, to thousands of other vehicles owned by agencies.

    Under the Automatic Vehicle Location system, agencies can get data on vehicle locations, potential engine problems, odometer readings, engine idle times, gas mileage and other things.

  • State defends law that bars petitions
    DENVER — Oklahoma Secretary of State Susan Savage told an appeals court Monday the state legally can bar nonresidents from circulating ballot petitions.

    Savage took that position in a written request for the court to reconsider its December decision that struck down an Oklahoma law. The law bars nonresidents from circulating petitions to place proposals on the ballot.

    The Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 3-0 decision by a panel of judges, said the law violates the First Amendment to the Constitution and said circulating petitions "involves core political speech.”

  • Privacy concerns enter teens’ site
    CHICAGO — Many teenagers cleaned up their MySpace profiles, deleting mentions of sex and booze and boosting privacy settings, if they got a single cautionary e-mail from a busybody named "Dr. Meg.”

    The e-mail was sent by Dr. Megan Moreno, lead researcher of a study of lower-income kids that she says shows how parents and other adults can encourage children to have safer Internet use.

    Her message read in part: "You seemed to be quite open about sexual issues or other behaviors such as drinking or smoking. Are you sure that’s a good idea? … You might consider revising your page to better protect your privacy.
