  • Officials seek information about bodies found in car in Spencer
    SPENCER -- The bodies of a man and woman were found in a car Friday by Oklahoma County sheriff's deputies.

    ?At this point it appears that both deceased had apparent head trauma,? spokesman Mark Myers said.

    Their identities have not been released, and the medical examiner hasn't examined the bodies yet.

    The sheriff's department received a call about 10:20 reporting suspicious activity at NE 34 and Wright Avenue, Myers said.

    Anyone with information is asked to call the Oklahoma County Sheriff?s Department at 869-2501.

  • 42 years ago today, a march toward equal opportunities
    LAWTON ? Two years and two days after President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, blacks in Lawton still were denied access to a highly popular swimming park.

    The act outlawing segregation in schools, public places and employment had no effect on Doe Doe Recreation Park, a Lawton destination on a hot summer day. It was a private operation that had the right, legally at least, to deny entrance to anyone the owners chose.

    On July 4, 1966, 42 years ago today, about 200 mostly black protesters descended on the park's gates carrying American flags, posters and singing religious and national hymns. Fifty-five were arrested for trespassing.

  • OSU researcher finds lizard species that lives and dies within one year
    An Oklahoma State University researcher gained national attention this week for figuring out that a bizarre chameleon species on the island of Madagascar is born and dies within a year.

    For more than 100 years, people had known about the tiny chameleon species Furcifer labordi, but no one noticed that it was living a furious life in hyper-drive ? a life more like those of annual plants or short-lived insects than that of an animal with a spine, said Kris Karsten, the OSU student who published his doctorate research this week in the "Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences.
