  • Man found dead after Mayes County house fire

    STRANG — An elderly man was found dead after a house fire near this Mayes County town late Thursday, a Tulsa television station reported.

    The man's name has not been released. He's believed to be in his 70s.

    Just before midnight, a passerby saw flames coming from the house. When firefighter arrived, the house was fully involved in fire, a fire chief said.

    The fire doesn't appear to be suspicious, the chief said. The state fire marshal's office is trying to determine a cause.

    Strang is about 11 miles northeast of Pryor.

  • Obama plans to nominate Clinton for top diplomat
    WASHINGTON -- President-elect Barack Obama plans to nominate Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state as early as next week, a new milestone for a former first lady and a convergence of two political forces who contested mightily for the presidency.

    Obama transition aides described a process Thursday that appears on track to make Clinton the top diplomat in an Obama administration, just one week after the two first met in secrecy to discuss the idea. Obama plans to nominate her after next Thursday's U.S. Thanksgiving holiday, aides said.

  • Mukasey takes get-well call from Bush
    WASHINGTON — Attorney General Michael Mukasey was hospitalized Thursday after he collapsed during a late-night speech and lost consciousness.

    "Oh, no, no!” people in the audience cried out as Mukasey slumped.

    The 67-year-old Mukasey, wearing a black tie and tuxedo, was 15 to 20 minutes into an address about terrorism when he began shaking slightly and slurring his words. As he read from his text, he seemed to get stuck on a word, paused, then his head bowed slightly and he swayed. Three or four men in suits rushed on stage and caught him.
